Ham Barbeque Sandwiches

While everyone is talking turkey lately with the big day forthcoming, I want to divert for a moment and talk ham. Why?? Because it’s football season and tailgates are in full swing. And, after your fill of turkey, you just may want something other than turkey! So…hang onto this one šŸ™‚

If you happen to be from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania like me, then you know ham barbeque. If not, I am about to introduce you. It’s @Isaly’s chip chopped ham (thinly sliced), with barbeque sauce on top of a fresh roll – delish! Here in Pittsburgh, we are all about @heinz catsup, too, which is a key ingredient in the sauce.

Growing up here, my dad would take me with him to the Isaly’s deli for fresh ham for his sandwiches and lucky me would score a cherry vanilla ice cream cone! You bet I ran with him each time he asked me if I wanted to go with him to the deli.

Throughout the years, as I lived in different areas of the country, whenever I would come back for a visit, I loved those ham barbeque sandwiches with a side of macaroni salad. Why am I telling you this? Because it is the easiest tailgate to put together. Simply bring your pre-sliced rolls and prepare the ham barbeque the day before so that it is heat & serve ready (takes a total of 30 minutes). As for the macaroni salad – that is, of course, served cold and prepped ahead of time. And, while you’re making the macaroni salad, go ahead an make some deviled eggs, too. I haven’t figured out what it is, but guys, especially, LOVE deviled eggs!! If you know the reasoning, leave me a comment.

Both the deviled egg and macaroni salad recipes are here in the recipe archives.
